Why Play This Game?

by Blaidd Drwg

#1 UCONN is playing #2 Stanford for the Women’s hoops crown tonight. Why bother? UCONN has won what seems like 5,000 straight games (they last lost in the 2008 final four to Stanford), has beaten 16 (!) ranked opponents this season (including Stanford once this season), has an average margin of victory of 30+ points, hasn’t had an opponent come within less than 20 points of beating them in over a month and has murdered its opponents in the tournament:

Game Opponent Opp Rank Margin Of Victory
1 Southern NR 56
2 Temple NR 54
3 Iowa State #16 38
4 Florida St #11 40
5 Baylor #18 20

That Rank column is National Rank, not seed. When was the last time that you saw a top 20 team in any sport get blow out the way that Iowa St, Florida St and Baylor have? This one just won’t be close – unless Stanford’s men’s team shows up for this game.

What an ugly 1st half of that game – 20 to 12. Ugh.

    I was considering doing a post-mortem post..

UConn: 19-58 from the floor, 32.8%
Stanford: 18-68 from the floor, 26.5%
    Total: 37-116, 31.9%
The teams combined to shoot ~20% in the first half.
    Free Throws Combined: 12-26, 46.1%
Stanford had one player go 0-12 from the floor and another go 1-9, including 1-6 from 3.

Halftime score was 20-12, Stanford. UConn then went on a 17-2 run to open the 2nd half. With 7:42 remaining in the game the score was 38-27 UConn — Stanford scored 7 points in the first 13 minutes of the 2nd half. At that point the game was effectively over.

I’ve got a theory as to why we saw *that* level of ineptitude that I’ll post at some point.

If the Stanford mens team showed up it wouldn’t be close either — the guys would wipe the floor with the UConn women.

Coltrane – who watches the womens tournament anyway?

It shows you that there aren’t that many good girl basketball teams out there, because they all go to one of about 6 schools. There have only been 6 different schools to win in the last 15 years. Tennessee has 5 of those wins and was runner-up 4 times.

I thought about doing a follow up post also, then I realized – it is women’s hoops, do I (or anyone else for that matter) really care that much. Then again – this post has the highest number of comments we have ever had.

I am curious as to your theory on the awful shooting in the game.

When I turned the game on Stanford was up about 18-7 midway through the first half. Had UConn been up by that much I wouldn’t have bothered. Once I realized how godawful the level of play was I figured it’d be good fodder around here.
